The 2016 competition for Hyperloop has seen great interest among budding technology enthusiasts. An estimate of over 700 individuals have signed up for a chance to get their pod design picked by the company.
The idea is to transport people from one place to another at speeds exceeding 700 mph. When successful, the travelling time between San Francisco and Los Angeles is expected to be reduced to only 30 minutes.
More details about the competition, including contest rules and prizes among many, would be announced in August this year. Meanwhile, it only a takes a simple sign-up process to join the event.
SpaceX has recently clarified that this competition is not because of any affiliation with a Hyperloop company.
“Neither SpaceX nor Elon Musk is affiliated with any Hyperloop companies. While we are not developing a commercial Hyperloop ourselves, we are interested in helping to accelerate development of a functional Hyperloop prototype.”
The idea has been worked upon since 2013, to significantly reduce travel time while simultaneously economizing the cost of travel. Elon Musk wants other entrepreneurs to become part of this project and help him realize his dream of fast yet cheap travel.
